Who is Chandraghanta?
Chandraghanta is the third Navdurga form of Goddess Mahadevi, who is worshipped on the third day of Navratri. His name Chandra-ghanta means "he who has a bell-shaped half moon". His third eye is always open, indicating his constant readiness to fight against evil. They are also known as “Chandrakhanda”, “Vrikshavahini” or “Chandrika”. According to Shiva Purana and Devi Mahatmya, Chandraghanta is the "Shakti" of Lord Shiva in the form of Chandrasekhar. Each aspect of Shiva is accompanied by Shakti, so is “Ardhanariswara”.

According to Shiv Puran, after doing penance for many years, Parvati married Lord Shiva. After marriage, a new life begins for every woman. When Parvati met Shiva at his house. While all this was happening, a new demon “Tarakasura” took root in the universe. Tarakasura's evil eye is on Shiva's family. He was keeping an evil eye on Parvati to unravel the real cause of her death. He had a boon that he would be killed only by the biological son of Shiva and Parvati. He appointed a demon named “Jatukasura” to create havoc in the lives of Parvati and Shiva. Jatukasura is an evil bat-demon. He and his army came to attack Parvati. Unaware of all this, Parvati was busy with her daily chores. While Shiva was doing severe penance, Parvati was handling daily chores on Mount Kailas. Parvati's fear blossomed. After facing continuous defeat, “Shiva Gana” or Shiv Soldier came to Parvati and pleaded for his protection. Parvati wept and went to where Shiva was doing his penance, but she was helpless. Shiva was unable to give up his penance. He reminded Parvati about her inner strength and said that she herself is Shakti Swaroopa. He reminded her that she herself is the mother of nature, the creation of the universe, and that she herself is sufficient to fight and control this situation. Then a large pack of wolves came to Parvati's aid. The wolves attacked the bats and Parvati fought with Jatakasura. After a long battle, Parvati came to know that Saitan is active by bats in the sky. So Parvati brought an hour to the battlefield and played it loudly, which made the bats fly. One of the wolves jumped on Jatukasura, growling when he fell to the ground. Then Parvati hit him on the head for hours, cut off his wings with a worm-like sword and finally put it in his chest to kill him.
This horrific form of Parvati with a knife in one hand and ghanta in the other; Brahma Dev named the mother sitting on the moon and wolf on the head as Chandraghanta. Later Shiva told Parvati that this war would provide courage to overcome any war and fear of obstacles.
The Form of Chandraghanta
Chandraghanta has ten hands, out of which two hands have trident, mace, bow-arrow, khadak, lotus flower, ghanta and Kamandalu, while one hand is left.
