Magh month has a very special significance from the religious point of view, the third date of “Shukla Paksha” of Magh month is also said to have special significance in Hindu religion. This is also called the third day of “Gupta Navratra”. This date is celebrated as “Gouri Tritiya Vrat(गौरी तृतीया व्रत)”. This festival has the same importance as “Teej” festival and also celebrated as the birth anniversary of “Mother Gauri”. What Happens by Fasting on Gauri Tritiya?

This fast is observed to obtain the immense blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is mentioned in the scriptures about the glory of this fast that one gets success in various hardships and life. According to the scriptures, observing this fast brings good fortune and women attain marital happiness.

Regarding the story of Gauri Vrat, it is written in the Puranas that due to the glory of this fast, King Daksh’s daughter got in the form of “Sati”. Sati Mata had chanted and performed penance to attain Lord Shiva, the result of which she had received. Mother Sati has many names in which Gauri is also one of her names. It is believed that Goddess Sati was married to Lord Shankar on the day and third date of Shukla Paksha called Tritiya, hence to get the blessings of good fortune on the day of Magh Shukla Tritiya, this Fast is observed.

Worship of Gauri Tritiya Vrat

• On this day, one should take bath early in the morning and worship idols or photos of Lord Shiva and Parvati or Gauri.
• On this day, fasting should be started with a resolution.
• Bathe the idols of Goddess Sati or Parvati and Lord Shiva with water mixed with “Panchgavya (पंचगव्य)”, “Ganga Jal” and sandalwood.
• Then install a Kalash.
• If you want to install a “Akhand Lamp” or “Akhand Jyoti” that would be better.
• First of all it is necessary to worship Shri Ganesh. Offer water, roli, mauli, sandalwood, vermilion, cloves, betel leaves, rice, betel nut, flowers, cardamom, bel leaves, fruits and dry fruits on Ganesh idols or photo.
• The idol of Mata Gauri is bathed with water, milk, curd, honey, Panchamrit, clean water then offered clothes and ornaments etc.
• Roli, sandalwood paste, vermilion and henna also must offer. And decorate the Mother Goddess with sixteen adornment items.
• Worship should be done by offering incense, flowers, dhoop, lamp, satvik food as naivedya and various types of five ritual fruits.
• After that, offer naivedya prepared for bhog of her like kheer, halwa, puri, sweets as you wish.
• After that offer “Tambulam (ताम्बुलम)” and “Dakshina”.
• After ritually worshiping the idols of Shiva and Parvati, read or listen the story of Gauri Tritiya and marriage material is offered to Gauri Mata finally.
• After that, if any mistake happens knowingly or unknowingly during the puja, pray to the Mother Goddess for forgiveness.
• This is finally, perform the aarti of Lord Shiva and Gauri ji.
• You need to keep this Vrat with fruits or fruits-based items. Need to take one time before sunsets only.
