Solar Eclipse (Surya Grahan)as per Sanatan Mythology
The story of solar eclipse is related to the churning of the ocean. In ancient times, gods and demons together churned the ocean. 14 gems were found in this churning. When nectar came out during the churning of the ocean, a war broke out between the gods and demons for it. Then Shri Hari took Mohini incarnation and started making the gods drink nectar. At that time, a demon named Rahu also took the form of a god and drank the nectar.
Moon and Sun recognized Rahu and informed Lord Vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu got angry and severed Rahu's head from his body. Because Rahu also drank the nectar, he became immortal. Since, then Rahu considers Moon and Sun as his enemies. These planets are afflicted from time to time. In the scriptures this event is called solar eclipse and lunar eclipse.
Solar Eclipse or Surya Grahan as per Modern Science
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, completely or partially obscuring the view of the Sun from a small part of the Earth. Such alignment occurs approximately every six months, at the new moon phase during eclipse season, when the Moon's orbital surface is closest to the plane of Earth's orbit. In a total eclipse, the Sun's disk is completely obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipse only a part of the Sun is obscured. Unlike a lunar eclipse, which can be seen from anywhere on the Earth's night side, a solar eclipse can only be seen from a relatively small area of the globe. However, although total solar eclipses occur on average every 18 months somewhere on Earth, they recur in any given location only once every 360 to 410 years.
Remember, An Eclipse Never Comes Alone!
A solar eclipse always occurs about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse.
