What is Purnima Tithi?

Purnima is the word for full moon in Sanskrit. Full Moon Day (पूर्णिमा का दिन) is the day (date) in every month when the full moon occurs, and is divided between two lunar fortnights (sides) in every month, and the moon appears exactly in a straight line, which is called symbiosis, with the Sun and the Earth. The full moon is considered the third of the four primary phases of the Moon; The other three phases are the new moon, first quarter moon, and third quarter Moon. The full moon shows 100% illumination, causes high tides, and may coincide with a lunar eclipse.

The Significance of Purnima Tithi(पूर्णिमा तिथि)

The day or date of Purnima is a very sacred day. People worship Lord Vishnu on the full moon day. People also worship भगवान सत्य नारायण and fast on this day. This day starts with sunrise and ends after the sight of the full moon in the evening. It is said that by offering Arghya to the Moon with full devotion, all the wishes and desires of a person can be fulfilled. A very strict fast has to be observed on this day. People also donate many things on this day. On Purnima Tithi, people take bath in Ganga(गंगा) or other holy rivers. There is one full moon in every month and 12 full moons days in a year. Each full moon has a different name and accordingly its meaning and importance is also different.
