When is Dhanteras (धनतेरस)?
Dhanteras is one of the most important parts of Diwali festival. It is also known as “Dhan Trayodashi”, is the first day that marks the festival of Diwali in most of India. It is come in the thirteenth day on the “Krishna Paksh” or called the dark lunar part means of the half of the month in Kartik month. This day is very auspicious and it is come sometimes just one day or two days before Diwali as per Sanatan Panchang. The term “Dhan+Teras”, Dhan means wealth and Teras means Trayadashi Tithi or 13th days.
Who is Dhanvantari?
On this day people also worship Lord Dhanvantari, he is also an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. who is also worshipped on the occasion of Dhanteras and considered is the god of “Ayurveda” who imparted the wisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of mankind and to help rid it of the suffering of disease.
Lord Dhanvantari, according to Sanatan Scriptures, emerged during Samudra Manthana, holding a pot full of amrita as a nectar bestowing immortality in one hand and the sacred text about Ayurveda in the other hand. He is also considered as an experienced physician of the devas in heaven. However, on the other hand, “The Indian ministry of Ayurveda” also celebrate and announced as the "National Ayurveda Day", on this day.
On the occasion of “Dhanteras (धनतेरस)” people do worship and special puja for Lord Dhanvantari.
Whereas, on the day, the goddess Lakshmi is believed to have appeared from the milk ocean called “Kheera Samudra”. When goddess Lakshmi appeared from the ocean then she moved around the world to stay anywhere. So, people do special puja of goddess Lakshmi on the day to attract their houses, so that the goddess Lakshmi will stay in their house forever.
The Significance of Dhanteras
Dhantrayadashi is very auspicious. On the day, people are clean and decorate their houses with different colorful lights, flowers, garlands, rangoli, exchange gifts with each other, wear new garments to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Diwali is a happy and prosperous festival; everyone like to celebrates it. It is also believed that, on this day if you do special puja as per Vaidic Tradition and keep her happy Goddess Lakshmi, then she will seat in the house forever and always fulfil all types of materials happiness as well as prosperous in the house. On the day, people buy jewellery or new utensils, house items, apparels, enter into the new house, starting new business, purchase new vehicles. Dhanteras is also called the “Lakshmi Day”. Because this day is very auspicious in all aspects for any kinds of auspicious works.
