He always said, “गौ सेवा परम धर्म”.
The Significance & Gopashtami
It is said that, Gopashtami was celebrated when Sri Krishna was around 7 to 8 years old. He takes a group of many cows for grazing to the banks of river Jamuna. Gopashtami is celebrated to mark Krishna's adulthood because King Nanda felt that Krishna had grown up now and he gave him the responsibility of looking after the cows of Vrindavan.
It is described in Shrimad Bhagwat that Lord Krishna used to play with cows and he loved cows very much.
The Story of Gopashatmi
According to Hindu mythology, Gopashtami is an important event in the life of Lord Krishna, whose actions saved the people of Braj from the wrath of the rain god Indra Dev.
When Indra Dev started attacking Braj people with heavy rain and Bajra, then Shri Krishna lifted Govrdhan Parvat with his little finger. All the Braja people sat under that Govardhan mountain for about 8 days. This divine event continued for seven days and on the eighth day Indra realized his mistake and came to ask forgiveness from Lord Krishna. After that, Sri Krishna forgive him and during this reconciliation, a holy cow named “Surabhi” showered milk on Indra and declared Lord Krishna as her son. Since then Gopashtami festival is celebrated with great wholeheartedly.
