What is Govatsa Dwadashi (गोवत्स द्वादशी)
Govatsa Dwadashi is a Hindu festival, in this festival people worship cow. Because in Hindu religion cow is call the mother or “Gau Mata”. Govatsa festival is also known as ‘Nandini Vrat,’ this festival comes in Krishna Paksh “Dwadashi Tithi” means just two days before of Diwali.
GoVatsa means “Go+Vatsa”, Go or Gau means cow and Vatsa means calf. In this Vrat people do puja for both of them.
Govatsa Dwadashi Knows in Different Name
It is a regional festival; People celebrate the same fast with different names and in different ways. Hindu devotees worship the sacred cow 'Nandini' during Govatsa Dwadashi. It is believed that by doing this all their wishes will be fulfilled.
It is widely celebrated in all sections of the country. This day is known as 'Vasu Baras' in Maharashtra and is the first day of Diwali celebrations.
Similarly, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, 'Shripad Vallabha Aradhana Utsav' is organized with great pomp on Govatsa Dwadashi at Pithapuram Datta Mahasansthan, and it is worth seeing. In Gujarat it is celebrated as 'Wagh Baras' festival.
Lord Sri Krishna also Like Worship of Cow
Cow is our mother. Lord Sri Krishna says that there is less and less to be gained from “Gau Seva”. Gau Seva, which is Satva Pradhan, nourishes the society with its milk and provides fertility to the soil with its cow dung manure, is worthy of worship everywhere.
Everything of cow like milk, dung, urine all are sacred and pure. Hindus call cow mother with gratitude. Where cows are protected and nurtured, there is no shortage in the prosperity of the individual, society and nation.
Lord Krishna loves cows. Lord Dattatreya also loves cows. The specialty of the cow is that it attracts the principles of all the gods that’s why it is called “Kamadhenu”. That is why it is said that all the Gods and Goddesses reside in the cow. The principles of Gods are stored in the components obtained from cow i.e. milk, ghee, cow dung or cow urine.
Cow is called the Kamadhenu in the Hindu Religion. Kamdhenu is the cow of heaven; to express the gratitude towards her, a cow is worshipped on this day.
How to Celebrate Govatsa Dwadashi
Govatsa Dwadashi, devotee will take one time meal, during the vrat devotees are making different types of recipes to worship the cow. Recipes are made in the dairy products like cow’s milk, cow ghee, butter, paneer and khoya etc.
- Worship of Cow Along with Calf
- Offer rice to the cow.
- Offer sandalwood paste, turmeric and vermilion applied on her head.
- Offer ornaments, flower garlands.
- Thereafter, need to be done ”Ang Nyas” and “Kar Nyas” this is made by touching in every part of the cow.
- Devotees are do puja for both of them simultaneously.
- A garland of Tulasi leaves as well as flowers are offered after chanting mantras.
- Thereafter, there is need to be done in “Shodashopachara Pooja” such as offer Padya, Arghya, Lighting Lamp, flowers, clothes, naivediya, dhoop.
- After all these things are done, devotees are do “Arti” in Kapoor, Laung, Cardamom, Ghee etc.
As per our Hindu Mythology, GoVatsa Pujan should do with Sixteen Substances or called “Shodashopachara Pooja”. But if you feel it is not possible for you, but we can worship with five substances also.
It is said that God resides in every particle. The worship of cow teaches us that, we should take care of every animal not only cow and love them as well, “Sri Hari”, who is in their soul and same also within inside us. Killing animals is a big sin, mercy shown to living beings is a big humanity.
