When is Gurupurab (गुरुपर्व)?
Guru Nanak Jayanthi also known as Gurupurab or Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav. This festival celebrates by the all the Sikh communities with wholeheartedly. Guru Nanak is the first Sikh guru. One of the most celebrated and important Sikh gurus and the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak is highly revered by the Sikh community.
Guru Nanak is the First Guru of Sikhism
This is a prime festival and one of the most sacred festivals in Sikhism, or Sikhi. The festivities in the Sikh religion revolve around the anniversaries of the 10 Sikh Gurus. These Gurus were responsible for shaping the beliefs of the Sikhs. Their birthdays, known as Gurpurab, are occasions for celebration and prayer among the Sikhs.
Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was born on Puranmashi of Kattak in 1469, according to the Vikram Samvat calendar in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi in the present Sheikhupura District of Pakistan, now Nankana Sahib.
The Significance of Guruparab
Guru Nanak Jayanthi is a Gazetted holiday in India. The controversial Bhai Bala Janamsakhi claims Guru Nanak was born on the Full Moon or called Pooranmashi in regional language of the Indian Lunar Month Kartik. The Sikhs have been celebrating Guru Nanak's birthday as Gurpurab around November worldwide. Sikh people are basically do a lot of charity, they feed people and poor. On the road, Gurudwara, these people organize langar at various places, feed people, and then also distribute new clothes. They believe that by doing all these pious deeds, they get blessings of the Guru and prosperity.
