What is Hariyali Teej?
The festival of Hariyali Teej is celebrated on the third day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan as per Sanatan Religion’s Calendar. This festival is a celebration of women. In the month of Shravan, when the entire nature is turned with green cover, on that occasion the hearts of women start dancing like peacock, swings are made in the branches of the tree. In Uttar Pradesh it is celebrated as Kajali Teej. Haryali Teej is also celebrated in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Haryali Teej is a fast basically it holds great importance for married women. This festival of faith, enthusiasm, beauty and love is basically celebrated to commemorate the reunion of Lord Shiva and mother Parvati.
Significance of Hariyali Teej
While describing Hariyali Teej in Shiv Purana, it is said that on this day Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were reunited, hence this fast has great significance for married women. On this day, women observe fast and worship Mahadev and Goddess Parvati.
This festival come in between July and August. Because of the greenery all around, it is called Hariyali Teej(हरियाली तीज). On this occasion women swing, they sing, local folk songs and enjoy the fast.
Hariyali Teej also Called Mehndi Festival
On this day, women apply henna on their hands, wrists and feet etc. in various artistic ways. That's why some people also called as called Mehndi festival. On this day, there is a tradition of married women taking blessings from the elderly women of their clan after applying mehendi. From unmarried girls to married young and old women participate. There is a tradition of newly married girls coming to their parents' home in the first month of Sawan to participate in this Hariyali Teej. On the day of Hariyali Teej, married women wear green makeup which looks very beautiful and different.
