About Idul Fitr 2025
The Significance of Eidul-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr begins with sunset on the night of the first sighting of the crescent moon. The night the moon is visible, it is called Pakistan, is celebrated as “Chand Raat” or Moon Night in countries like Bangladesh.
If the moon is not visible immediately after the 29th day of the previous lunar month either because of clouds or because the western sky is still too bright when the moon sets, the holiday is celebrated the next day. It is celebrated for one to three days depending on the country. Fasting is prohibited on the day of Eid, and a special prayer is designated for this day. As an obligatory act of charity, giving to the poor and needy before offering Eid prayers is called “Zakat-ul-Fitr”.
When Eidul Fitr Celebration Started?
According to Muslim tradition, Muhammad initiated the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. According to some hadiths, these festivals began in Medina after Muhammad's migration from Mecca. Anas ibn Malik, a companion of Muhammad, reported that when Muhammad reached Medina, he found that people were celebrating two special days in which they entertained themselves by entertaining. Muhammad then remarked that God had appointed two mandatory days of celebration, namely “Eid al-Fitr” and “Eid al-Adha”.
