The Significance of Indra Jatra(इंद्र जात्रा)
During the festival, ancestral people are also worshipped and remembered in Nepal. The main venue of the festival is Kathmandu Durbar Square. This festival goes for a total of eight days in Kathmandu from the 12th day of the Shukla Paksha of Yanla or Gyala, the eleventh month of the lunar calendar of the Nepal era, to the 4th day of Krishna Paksha.
Indra Jatra is also known as "Yenya Punhi (येन्या पुन्ही)" in Nepal. This is one of the most famous festivals celebrated in Yah. The main significance of this festival is that it is the biggest religious street festival in Nepal. "Yenya" means "Kathmandu", "Nya" means "festival", and "Puhni" means full moon, so one of its meanings is the birthday of the old city of Kathmandu. There are two types of events in Yah celebrations, Indra Jatra and Kumari Jatra.
1) Indrajatra(इंद्रजात्रा)
Indrajatra includes masked dances of gods and demons, performances of holy saints and shouts of praise to Indra, the king of heaven whereas.
2) Kumari Jatra
Kumari Jatra, meaning chariot festival of Kumari, involves Ganesha, Bhairava and Kumari dressed up as gods and goddesses and singing in human forms as they ride on three chariots accompanied by musical bands. Public crowds to see the procession.
The total eight-days of Indra Yatra and Kumari Yatra festival comes in September and is one of the most exciting and prestigious festivals of the Newar Community of Kathmandu in Nepal. It also marks the beginning of the month as long festival season of autumn.
