About Kashmir Martyrs' Day 2025
An incident occurred on 13 July 1931, thousands of Kashmiris gathered in Srinagar's Central Jail to witness the trial of Abdul Qadir, he was a protester at the time. When the time for the mandatory "Zuhr" prayer approached, a Kashmiri stood up to give "Azan". The Dogra governor at the time, Raizada Tartilok Chand, ordered his troops to fire on them, at that time more than 22 Kashmiris were killed on the spot.
People carried the dead for cremation through the streets of "Maharaj Ganj" in Srinagar, shouting slogans against Dogra brutality. The incident shook the state, and a period of mourning was observed for a week. A kind of strike took place, with the city coming to a standstill from 13 July to 26 July 1931, disrupting traffic between Srinagar, Rawalpindi and Jammu.
In addition, there were some Hindu shopkeepers in Kashmir who mocked the mourners, which led to violence and protests intensified as opportunists looted shops. Anti-Hindu riots broke out, resulting in the death of three Hindus, injuries to many others and looting of shops belonging to Hindus.
This incident is unforgettable for every Kashmiri and since then till date 13th July 1931 is officially celebrated by the Government of Kashmir as Kashmir Martyrs Day.
