Introduction to Khudurukuni Osha

Festivals bring with lots of fun, excitement, and nostalgia in our life. Each of them is practical with an interesting story related since ancient times. Similarly, there is one such a festival celebrated by the Oriya people is called “Khudurukuni Osa (ଖୁଦୁରୁକୁଣୀ ଓଷା) or Vrat” it is also known as Bhalukuni Osha. It is mainly celebrated in the coastal parts of Odisha on the Sunday after Shravan Purnima in the month of Bhadrapada or between August and September.

Who is Worship in Khudurkuni Vrat?

During this festival Goddess Mangala is worshiped mainly by young girls who wish for the safety, prosperity, and good health of their brothers. It shows the purity and beauty of the relationship between brother and sister. In the modern-day celebrations of Khudurukuni Osha, basically girls are wake up early in the morning and collect various types of flowers. After bathing, they pray to the Sun by making small mount in the sand called “Balunka” on the banks of ponds or rivers and worship by decorating them with turmeric, vermilion, and all kinds of flowers.

Girls are basically worshipped this festival in a team. During the puja they offer following items to the Goddess Mangla.

The main Naivedya in this Puja is “Khuda Bhaja” which is called puffed rice made in broken and low quality rice, that’s why this fast name is “Khudu-rukuni” . Basically, poor people eat this. Besides that people also offer as naivedya in puja such as :

  • Jaggery, Chuda(Flaked Rice), Pithas(Rice Cake),
  • Seasonal fruits like cucumber, coconut, banana etc.

Khudurukuni Osha Katha(ଖୁଦୁରୁକୁଣୀ ଓଷା କାହାଣୀ)

As per Khudurukuni Vrat, there was a young girl named as “Tapoi” who survived on the god after her brothers left. He was given nothing else to eat. During the puja, girls are listen “Tapoi's childhood life”. This fast continues in Sunday to Sunday in whole Bhadra month.

It is believed that in the early days Odisha traders used to travel far and wide, mostly Java and Sumatra Islands in Voyage called “Boitas” to trade. His family members bid him farewell and prayed for his good health and safe return home. The name "Tapoi" is popular in this festival and so its story.

Tapoi was the only and youngest sister of her seven brothers. He belonged to a rich merchant family. Being an only sister, she was equally loved and pampered by her parents as well as all her brothers and their wives. All his demands were met immediately what she was demanded.

Time according her parents were died and she was staying with her brothers’ families. But her brothers were always stay outside of the house regarding the business purposes. When she demanded for anything, her brothers’ wives called Bhabhis’ did not fulfil her wishes, they tortured and misbehaved her most of the time moreover, in spite of that, one day they get out the Tapoi from the house. There was no way of Tapoi, after all she worship “Goddess Mangala” a form of Godess Durga and stay in the jungle. Then after days passed, Tapoi’s brothers are came back through the Voyage. They find Tapoi’s and ask their wives they told something different story and hide the truth. After all, they try to find out their sister and identified in the jungle. Then they give to her sister new precious clothes, ornaments to her sister and told to stay in the Voege, when her Bhabhis’ are come to worship the Voeage, you should cut their noses on at that time.

Then, Tapoi’s borthers told to their wives to go to the voyage and worship as well as do perform for rituals. Tapoi’s was already there, she immediately cut their noses and left out her small Bhabhi’s nose. Because she was always support to Tapoi and was a very pious nature human being.

So however, Tapoi get Goddess Mangala is blessings and return backed to her normal life and liver like a queen rest of the life. So, since then till today onwards young girls are worship “Goddess Mangala” to get blessings of the Goddess. Khudurukuni Osha also called Bhalukuni Osha for the welfare of them and their brothers.
