Pahili Raja date is always the first day of the three-day festival. The festival is celebrated to respect Bhudevi, the wife of Lord Jagannath, and an idol of Bhudevi can be found in Puri Jaganath temple.

The day before first day is called “Sajabaja” or called “Shringar” preparatory day during which the house, kitchen including grinding stones are cleaned, spices are ground for three days. During these three days women and girls take rest from work and wear new dresses, sarees, alata (a liquid red color do paint on the feet), and wear various types of ornaments. On the day people worship the Goddess Earth with seasonal fruits, flowers and Naivedyas are offered to Mother Earth.

During all these four days of the festival, it is considered to be the menstruating period of Mother Earth. During the festival all agricultural operations remain suspended. As a mark of respect towards the Earth during her menstruation days, all agricultural works comes to stop as reserve mode during these days.
