The Meaning of Shab-e-Barat
Shab-e-Barat or the Night of Forgiveness is an important Islamic festival. Celebrated on the 15th of Shaban, it is believed that on this night Allah decides the fate and future of every living being on earth. Shab-e-Barat literally means the Night of Atonement. Shab-e-Barat has its own traditions depending on ethnic diversity and local cultures. It has many names around the world, such as Cheragh-e-Barat, Barat ki Raat, Berat Kandili or Nisfu Syaban. Shaban is the eighth month of the Islamic calendar and holds great significance.
From this day onwards, Muslims prepare for the holy month of Ramadan by doing good deeds and voluntarily fasting. On Shab-e-Barat many Muslims spend the night in worship, either individually in their homes or collectively in mosques in the night prayer- 'Qiyam-ul-Lail'.
It is believed that on the night of Shab-e-Barat, Prophet Muhammad prayed for his family members in the graveyard. On this occasion, many Muslims visit the graves of their loved ones and ask for forgiveness for the dead. Many Muslims give gifts and sweets to each other on Shab-e-Barat, in order to strengthen relationships and cement ties.
