The Meaning of Thiruvonam (तिरुवोनम)
Thiruvonam is the last day of Onam celebrations which is very important for the Kerala Hindus. The word “Thiru-Onam” is pronounced as “Thiruvonam”, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Kerala. It is mainly a harvest festival. Every day of Onam has a special significance.
Tenth Day of Onam is Called Thiruvonam
- The first day of Onam begins with “Atham” and proceeds
- The second day of Onam is Chithira,
- The third day of Onam is Chodi,
- The fourth day of Onam is Visakham,
- Similarly, the fifth day is Anizham,
- The sixth day is Thriketa,
- Seventh day is Moolam,
- The eighth day of Pongal is Pooradam,
- The ninth day is Uthradam, and
- Finally, the tenth day is Thiruvonam which is the last day of Onam.
Thiruvonam is the Peak of Onam
The Onam celebrations in Kerala, reflecting the vibrancy of colours, flavours, and traditions. This auspicious day commemorates the return of the mythical King Bali, a beloved ruler whose reign was characterised by prosperity and happiness. Onam brings communities across Kerala together in a unique celebration of unity and joy. Homes are decorated with intricate floral carpets called “Pookkalam (पुक्कलम)”, and the air is filled with the sounds of traditional art forms and games. Homes are meticulously cleaned and decorated, setting the stage for the lavish “Onasadya(ओनासाड्या)” feast, which culminates with the sweet delight of Payas, sweets recipes.
