About Ugadi 2025
What is Ugadi
The old or Adi Yuga, also called Samvatsaradi, meaning "beginning of the year", is the New Year’s Day according to the Hindu calendar and is celebrated in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.
The time cycle consists of 60 years, each year is given a different name. The first day of each year is called 'Ugadi'. The word Ugadi can be divided into two parts, "Uga" means the order of stars and Aadi means "beginning".
It is celebrated in these regions on the first day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month Chaitra. It usually falls in late March or early April of the Gregorian calendar. It also falls during the Tamil month of Phalguna or Chaitra, sometimes the 27th nakshatra Revati occurs on the next day of Amavasya. Ugadi day is centered on the first Amavasya after the March equinox.
What people do during the Ugadi
On this day people celebrate the festival by drawing colorful patterns on the floor called Muggulu or Rangoli, decorating doors with mango leaves called Toran, purchasing gifts like new clothes, etc. Pachadi is a notable festive food which has a mixture of all the tastes like sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent and spicy.
In Telugu and Kannada Hindu traditions, it is a symbolic reminder to expect all kinds of experiences in the coming new year and make the most of them.
Followers of the Sauraman Calendar System celebrate Ugadi in Karnataka when the Sun enters Aries, which is also the festival of Baisakhi, and is locally known as “Sauraman Ugadi” or “Mesha Sankranti”.
